Sophie Cunningham Addresses Misinterpretations and Praises Teammates
Sophie Cunningham, a prominent player for the Indiana Fever, recently responded to misleading narratives stemming from her remarks about teammates Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. Cunningham’s praise of her teammates, who are in the running for the WNBA MVP award, came during her new podcast with trainer Drew Hanlan.
During the latest podcast episode, Hanlan highlighted how a clip showing Cunningham praising Mitchell sparked an online uproar among fans. They mistakenly believed Cunningham was disparaging Caitlin Clark, despite her clear support for both players.
On the “No Hesitation” podcast, Cunningham clarified, “I have two great players on my team, and I’m going to promote both of them. I could argue that Kelsey deserves MVP. I could equally argue for CC’s MVP candidacy. It’s all about how the internet chooses to snip moments.”
Cunningham referred to the situation as “psychotic,” expressing frustration with how WNBA media is portrayed.
Cunningham also defended herself against claims of being uninterested in her teammates’ performance at the FIBA World Cup finals. Her involvement in a NASCAR event prevented her from watching the match.
Cunningham has become a standout personality in the league since joining Clark and the Fever, known for her candidness and diverse opinions. Her podcast with Hanlan aims to combat false narratives spread by media or fans seeking viral fame.
In the current MVP race, Clark and Mitchell are frequently mentioned, but aren’t leading contenders. A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces is the frontrunner for her fifth MVP award, with Olivia Miles from the Minnesota Lynx as second in line.
The Indiana Fever will continue their season with a match against the Toronto Tempo on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.
