The sports industry is now a cultural economy valued at $2.3 trillion. Major moments are driven by more than just scores and trophies. Celebrity appearances at key American football championships or annual tennis tournaments boost social media engagement, drawing viewers beyond traditional fans. Stadiums have evolved into stages where sports, celebrity, and commerce converge.
Marc Ettrick foresaw these cultural shifts years before they became evident. Prior to the frequent celebrity appearances and discussions on social media, Ettrick recognized the merging of sports and entertainment. This insight led to the creation of Convochat, an AI-powered social networking platform. It combines sports, pop culture, and lifestyle content, offering users a diverse experience.
“I noticed sports and pop culture merging around five or six years ago,” Ettrick recalls. As a former NCAA Division I football player and sports agent, he attended numerous events that highlighted this trend. At Radio Row events, he observed the collaboration between athletes and Hollywood celebrities, realizing the two worlds were merging.
“I would walk into Radio Row, and half the room would be athletes while the other half would be Hollywood celebrities,” he says.
Ettrick saw this as a long-term change in content consumption. Audiences wanted a single platform where sports, celebrity news, and lifestyle converged. Convochat embodies this concept, blending blog-driven content with short-form video. Users engage with breaking sports and entertainment discussions, written commentary, and community reactions.
The platform also includes content on restaurants, luxury hotels, travel, nightlife, and fashion, reflecting the lifestyle interests of athletes and entertainers. Users can learn about high-profile restaurants and then discuss major sporting events.
“We’re focused on where people are going, what’s happening, who’s courtside, and what’s trending,” Ettrick explains. This reflects audiences’ interaction with entertainment today. Couples often follow the same story for different reasons. One may be interested in a sporting event, while another follows a celebrity appearance, yet they discuss the same cultural moment.
“Those stories bring them together. They end up watching the same event because both worlds are now connected,” he says.
Ettrick emphasizes Convochat’s community-driven nature. It encourages users to engage with topics they care about, making reactions as significant as headlines. The platform offers “infotainment,” where information is delivered with the energy of social media.
“We’re on the pulse of pop culture,” Ettrick adds. The crossover between sports and pop culture has made live events inseparable from celebrity culture. Platforms must evolve, reflecting how audiences engage with shared cultural moments. The upcoming media era will be defined by the seamless intersection of these distinct worlds.
