The Odyssey: Christopher Nolan’s Epic Triumph at the Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s nearly three-hour epic, ‘The Odyssey,’ dominated the box office over the weekend, raking in approximately $124.5 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada.

Hollywood has spent two decades reducing risk by focusing on intellectual property rather than individual talents. Franchises have become the key attractions, overshadowing directors and stars. Characters like Harry Potter, Optimus Prime, Iron Man, and Elsa have taken center stage.

Christopher Nolan defies this trend. The success of ‘The Odyssey’ — a blockbuster adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem — highlights Nolan’s unique draw for audiences.

‘The Odyssey,’ the first commercial feature entirely filmed in IMAX, achieved remarkable ticket sales from Thursday to Sunday, according to Rentrak, a film data service. It stands as the year’s largest domestic opening for a live-action film. For 2026, only ‘Toy Story 5’ ($160 million) and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ ($132 million) surpass it.

PostTrak, a film industry research service, reports that most ticket buyers chose to attend due to Nolan’s involvement. The star-studded cast was the secondary draw. This ensemble includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, and Tom Holland.

IMAX theaters contributed roughly 24 percent of the opening’s total earnings. AMC Entertainment, the largest theater operator worldwide, scheduled special 70-millimeter IMAX screenings at various hours to meet demand, with many shows selling out.

‘When we look at our presales for the next five weeks, we’ve sold out shows in IMAX film in week five for a lot of theaters, so this thing is going to play,’ said Rich Gelfond, IMAX’s chief executive.
