The shofar, an ancient instrument made from a ram’s horn, serves as a potent symbol of God’s majesty and a call to repentance. It plays a significant role in Jewish traditions, such as Rosh Hashanah, where it acts as a spiritual alert to align with divine expectations. During Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the shofar’s sound concludes the day’s fasting, expressing hope for forgiveness and wishing for a prosperous year ahead.
Traditionally, the shofar signifies healing, completeness, and spiritual redemption. In Dr. Marc Siegel’s book, “THE ANGELS AMONG US,” the shofar is a medium through which God’s messenger facilitates a miraculous recovery for Nikki Goldstein, a journalist with severe chronic illnesses in Sydney, Australia.
By September 2022, Goldstein’s health had deteriorated significantly. A CT scan revealed extensive lung damage, prompting doctors to place her on a ventilator and an emergency lung transplant list. Her condition seemed grave when Rabbi Eli Schlanger, from Chabad Bondi Beach, visited her. After offering prayers, he blew the shofar over her, a moment that led to unexpected improvements in her health and a recognized miracle. Goldstein later co-authored “Conversations With My Rabbi” with Schlanger.
In another instance, on December 14, 2025, during a Hanukkah celebration in Bondi Beach, a tragic event unfolded. Rabbi Schlanger confronted gunmen during an antisemitic attack, pleading for peace. Despite his bravery, he was fatally shot, while his family survived with injuries.
Interestingly, this Jewish instrument has impacted lives differently. For example, a rabbi experienced a mild stroke while blowing the shofar, leading to a diagnosis of underlying health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure. This unexpected event allowed for crucial, life-saving medical intervention.
Historically, the shofar’s origins trace back to the Old Testament, where it was sounded at Mount Sinai. Its legacy continues to inspire acts of faith and healing.
