The White House has responded strongly to comments made by Natalie Maines, singer of The Chicks, following her controversial social media attack on President Donald Trump. This week, Maines posted an explicit rant on Instagram, accusing Trump of undermining democracy.
In her post, Maines wrote, “Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly slut is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists. But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything.” She added, “My last post that called him a fugly slut got removed. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Repost and help the message live.”
A spokesperson for the White House responded by labeling Maines as “a despicable nobody suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted her peanut-sized brain,” according to Fox News Digital.
Maines’ comments quickly triggered a wave of reactions online. Some praised her for speaking out, while others criticized her for being divisive and disconnected from the general public. One commenter suggested, “[She’ll] never learn… She ruined her entire band’s life by running her mouth about her political beliefs on a stage she’s paid to display her talent on, not her political beliefs.”
Despite backlash, several supporters have defended Maines, acknowledging her history of vocal opposition to Republican presidents. One comment read, “OG’s know this isn’t an out-of-left-field opinion from you. And you’re still [100%] correct.”
Maines’ history of political controversy is longstanding. In 2003, ahead of the Iraq War, she told an audience in London she was “ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas,” in reference to President George W. Bush. This sparked significant backlash, particularly in the country music community. Many radio stations removed The Chicks’ music from their playlists, and some fans destroyed their albums in protest.
Despite the controversies, Maines continues to engage with her fans and critics alike. Fox News Digital reached out to Maines for further comment on her recent post.
