Three Die from Unknown Substance; Officials Hospitalized

Three individuals died after exposure to an unidentified substance in Mountainair, New Mexico. More than a dozen emergency responders were hospitalized following the incident. The New Mexico State Police reported that the situation occurred in a home near Albuquerque.

Authorities, including state police and the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office, responded to what was initially suspected to be a drug overdose. Upon arrival, they discovered four unresponsive individuals inside the residence around 11 a.m. Tragically, three of those individuals were confirmed dead.

Mountainair’s Mayor, Peter Nieto, indicated on social media that two people were found deceased at the scene, with another passing away later.

The exposure affected 18 emergency officials, who experienced symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. These officials, as well as the fourth person found in the home, were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital for monitoring and quarantine. Two of the officials are in serious condition.

Efforts to investigate and identify the substance are ongoing. The situation prompted a significant response from various agencies, including the FBI’s Albuquerque office. Hazmat teams from Albuquerque Fire Rescue assisted in collecting samples and decontamination efforts.

State police noted their belief that the substance was likely transmitted through contact, not airborne. They assured there is no public threat.

The University of New Mexico Hospital assessed and decontaminated 23 patients. Most were discharged after showing no symptoms, while three remain under observation, suffering from headaches, nausea, and vomiting.
