On June 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. ET, a tragic incident occurred as three firefighters lost their lives on Saturday, and two others suffered burns from a blaze that spanned the Utah-Colorado border. The U.S. Wildland Fire Service issued a statement confirming the tragedy.
The firefighting crew was engaged in battling the Knowles and Gore wildfires. Multiple agencies have dispatched firefighters to western Colorado, where these fires have merged with the Snyder fire, consuming 28,000 acres.
Throughout the past week, wildfires have ravaged the Southwest. Warmer winters, reduced snowpack, and strong winds have transformed the dry landscape into a tinderbox. The fires have extended into Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada.
In Colorado, the flames rapidly overcame federal firefighters who sought shelter amidst intense heat and heavy smoke, a statement from the Department of the Interior revealed.
At the Grand Junction Regional Airport, a medevac helicopter landed around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, facing a gusty wind that held flags tightly eastward. Over a dozen state and local firefighters awaited on the tarmac with gurneys, standing attentively.
They stood solemnly as the three bodies, draped in flags, were unloaded from the helicopter and placed in the coroner’s vans. The drivers allowed firefighters, still dirty and soot-covered from the fireline, to drive the bodies of their fallen comrades.
