Pittsburgh Steelers’ edge rusher TJ Watt was visibly frustrated during the team’s Week 4 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Several Steelers players were caught on video expressing their dissatisfaction. Watt’s frustration seemed directed at Steelers’ defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. On the sidelines, Watt grabbed a headset likely connected to Graham and appeared to deliver a heated message.
Some consider Watt’s actions potentially disrespectful to Graham. However, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger believes Watt has earned the right to express his concerns about Graham’s defensive strategy openly. Roethlisberger discussed the incident on his podcast, ‘Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger’. The two-time Super Bowl champion shared that Watt’s message probably resonated with players, as it’s not something he does frequently.
‘When it doesn’t happen that often… When TJ Watt grabs that thing, it’s probably like, “Okay, something is going on,”’ Roethlisberger said. ‘If he does this every week, it would be like, “What are we doing?” He’s a leader, he’s a captain. I assume he’s a captain, he should be. If not, he’s a Hall of Fame guy making plays. He’s a bright spot for this team. Because he doesn’t do it that often, it’s going to create headway.’
Whether you believe Watt was justified or not, he appears respected enough to voice his opinions publicly without criticism from past organization greats like Roethlisberger. Watt and the Steelers’ defense aim to recover from their Week 4 loss as they host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. The Colts enter with back-to-back wins over the Houston Texans and the Washington Commanders.
