Tom Selleck Reflects on ‘Blue Bloods’ Finale

Tom Selleck shared his thoughts on the end of ‘Blue Bloods,’ describing it as a ‘very frustrating’ experience. Despite the show ranking sixth among broadcast programs, the cast took a 25% salary cut to keep it airing. On Ted Danson’s ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name’ podcast, Selleck discussed the unexpected end after 15 seasons and 293 episodes, noting the project was a ‘labor of love.’ He emphasized the rarity of a harmonious work environment amidst ego clashes that often affect TV shows.

Selleck, who played the family patriarch, set a positive example on set. This unity among cast members was evident, as at the last family dinner, everyone expressed the wish to return. Despite concessions like salary cuts to extend the show’s life, ‘Blue Bloods’ faced cancelation, perplexing given its performance. ‘It was very frustrating,’ Selleck commented, noting the show ranked No. 6 in its 15th year.

The 81-year-old actor highlighted the loyalty and cohesion of the cast, expressing that replacing main characters like Jamie or Danny would have been inconceivable. ‘Blue Bloods’ managed to retain its original cast over its long run, a challenging achievement in television.

Selleck also looked back on the series’ end with TV Insider, stating his frustration stemmed from the show’s ongoing success. He expressed disbelief at the network’s decision to end a program that consistently won Friday nights over 15 years. He admitted the transition away from the show would take time to process, recounting a moment when he forgot the series had concluded.

Reflecting on his future roles, Selleck expressed doubts about joining Donnie Wahlberg’s spinoff, ‘Boston Blue.’ In an interview with Hour Detroit, he mentioned his focus on ensuring ‘Blue Bloods’ holds its place in TV history, while feeling it’s not his role to continue playing Frank Reagan.
