Tony Romo and CBS Sports have decided to end their partnership. This follows his arrest for operating while impaired (OWI) and subsequent plea deal. Despite this setback, history suggests Romo may return to broadcasting, much like his comebacks with the Dallas Cowboys.
Romo was arrested in Milwaukee for the OWI incident, prompting statements from both CBS Sports and Romo. CBS expressed gratitude for Romo’s contributions, stating, “We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.” J.J. Watt will fill Romo’s spot alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the season.
Romo’s statement showed pride in his work and indicated plans for a break to focus on his health and family. He stated, “I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years… I’m going to use this time to take a break… and focus on my health and my family.”
The separation was negotiated, with Romo receiving payments as part of the agreement. He signed a ten-year contract in 2020 for $180 million, with $70-$75 million remaining. The OWI incident likely cost him financially, yet his skills surpass many current analysts.
Other personalities have faced legal issues yet returned to broadcasting roles. Charles Barkley, Al Michaels, and Marv Albert all returned to television after legal troubles. This suggests Romo might eventually make a similar comeback.
Currently, Romo faces a six-month revocation of driving privileges, completion of an alcohol-assessment program, and installation of an ignition-interlock device. These legal obligations may eventually lead to him being welcomed back by sports broadcasting.
