Tony Romo’s Future with CBS Remains Uncertain Amid Legal Issues

Tony Romo’s current status with CBS Sports is in question following his recent arrest. CBS Sports president, David Berson, indicated that there is no set timeline or final decision on Romo’s future after his OWI arrest last month. Romo is on indefinite leave from the network.

During ‘NFL on CBS’ Media Day, Berson addressed questions about Romo, stating, “It’s an evolving situation and we are still assessing. There is no timetable or final decision at this time.” He emphasized that this is both a personal and legal matter for Romo.

Romo’s leave comes after his arrest by Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies for driving under the influence in Wisconsin, following a golf event. He was charged with operating while intoxicated, having an open bottle of alcohol in his vehicle, and making an unsafe passing.

Berson also explained why Romo was placed on leave, mentioning the importance of CBS’s image and brand. “The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product,” he added, expressing confidence in the team stepping up in Romo’s absence.

Currently, Romo is under a substantial 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS, with $72 million remaining from the 2020 agreement. Despite his leave, his future past the 2026 season remains in question, as there were doubts about retaining him even before his legal issues arose.

Concerns regarding Romo’s preparation and chemistry with CBS play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz have been raised recently, with criticisms suggesting a decline in his performance. Reports also mention a morals clause in Romo’s contract that CBS might use in response to his arrest. Such an action would likely face legal challenges, given the significant amount still owed to Romo.

Romo is scheduled to appear in court on September 21, eight days after CBS Sports’ first NFL broadcast of the season.
