‘Tony’ Trailer Review

The trailer for A24’s new film, Tony, has been released. This dramedy about Anthony Bourdain features Dominic Sessa, Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, and Antonio Banderas. Directed by Matt Johnson, the movie delves into Bourdain’s early life, informed by his self-description in Kitchen Confidential as a ‘spoiled, miserable, narcissistic, self-destructive young lout.’

Set in 1975, 19-year-old aspiring writer Tony from New Jersey applies for a prestigious fellowship. Confident he will receive it, he tells everyone he has succeeded. However, after failing, Tony travels to Cape Cod in pursuit of Nancy, played by Emilia Jones, a girl he has been infatuated with. Nancy, however, is unavailable, leaving Tony without a plan or funds.

Tony finds himself working for a man known only as Chef, portrayed by Antonio Banderas, in a small lobster restaurant in Provincetown. Tony doesn’t anticipate how much this experience in the kitchen will alter his outlook.

Director Matt Johnson, known for his comedic work, joins the ranks of filmmakers such as Judd Apatow and Paul Feig. Johnson wrote and co-directed Tony with Matthew Miller, Todd Bartels, and Lou Howe, providing a comedic yet heartfelt portrayal of Bourdain’s early struggles and unique humor.

Dominic Sessa captures Bourdain’s essence, providing humor and depth. Antonio Banderas excels as Tony’s boss and mentor, contributing both humor and heartfelt moments.

The film, a coming-of-age story, offers an intimate insight into Anthony Bourdain’s journey to becoming the renowned figure he was. His fans will appreciate the portrayal, and Johnson continues to make his mark in the comedic film landscape.
