Tornado Aftermath: South Suburbs Recover from Storms

The National Weather Service reported an EF-1 tornado hit Hazel Crest, Homewood, Country Club Hills, and Harvey, with an EF-0 tornado impacting Orland Park. These events brought the total tornadoes in the area to three, with another EF-1 tornado previously confirmed in Lansing.

Widespread Damage and Power Outages

Nakita Cloud from Hazel Crest noted the severe nature of the storm’s destruction. Power outages persisted in the area, and residents were advised to stay indoors due to downed power lines.

“Until they get those lines back up, getting all the services up and running will be challenging,” Cloud explained.

Residents were reminded to keep children and pets away from damaged areas with mixed power lines.

Complex Tornado Path and Community Response

The tornado affecting Homewood and Hazel Crest had a complicated track. Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld highlighted the extensive power outages and traffic signal malfunctions, with essential services operating on generators.

“People on medical devices should ensure their status is known to ComEd,” Hofeld advised.

Residents were encouraged to report home damage through a local survey.

Red Cross Support and Shelter Operations

A shelter was established at Louis Sherman Community Center in Steger. Director Fay Kiaurakis facilitated housing solutions and organized activities to ease the distress of displaced families, drawing from personal experience with homelessness as a child.

“It’s crucial for kids to view it as a temporary change, not a frightful experience,” Kiaurakis emphasized.

Efforts will continue until further assessments determine the shelter’s necessity beyond Friday.

Individual Accounts and Ongoing Challenges

Crete resident Seldon Ledford reported unprecedented flooding in his home, attributing it to the severe storm. Power outages affected senior living spaces, adding further challenges.

Orland Park had largely restored power. Mayor Jim Dodge confirmed the tornado diagnosis despite initially unverified funnel cloud sightings, noting relief at the absence of injury or extreme structural damage.

Lansing’s preparedness coordinator, Dennis Murrin, pointed out substantial damage around Oakwood Estates. He stressed the importance of minimizing traffic to aid cleanup efforts.

Overall, the region faces considerable recovery tasks, with communities banding together to offer support and rebuild.
