Tornado Strikes Northeastern Wisconsin, Causes Extensive Damage
A tornado tore through northeastern Wisconsin on Monday, shrouding the midday sky in darkness. The fierce winds prompted workers to seek safety in office basements, while homes were splintered and twisted metal scattered across highways. The storm, which knocked out power to over 30,000 residents, did not result in any reported fatalities or injuries as of Monday evening. However, emergency teams continued their search efforts, according to Gordon Hintz, the top elected official in Winnebago County.
The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado’s presence in Winnebago County, approximately 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee. The storm caused notable damage in cities such as Appleton and Menasha. Police Chief Matt Albrecht of Menasha reported severe impacts on local homes and businesses.
The tornado emerged from a large storm system fueled by accumulated heat and humidity, as explained by meteorologist Scott Berschback from the National Weather Service. Power restoration in the affected area could take several days, Hintz noted.
Heather Schroeder described hearing crackling and popping sounds as the tornado demolished a laundromat, a bakery, and a tavern on a street corner in Menasha, located about 30 miles south of Green Bay. Rescue workers extracted a person from one of the damaged buildings, said Schroeder, an employee nearby. It remains uncertain whether the rescued individual survived. Cars were overturned and a gas leak emerged at the laundromat.
“There’s nothing left,” Schroeder remarked. The tornado ripped roofs from homes and overturned vehicles in a Menasha neighborhood near Lake Winnebago. Video footage exposed a destructive path, reducing some homes to mere outer walls.
Witness Greg Van Driest observed the sky darken as he worked in downtown Appleton. “The word we all were using was ‘ominous,’” he recalled. “You looked outside and you thought it was three in the morning, it was that dark.”
Ongoing Searches Despite No Reported Casualties
Hintz conveyed that multiple buildings were destroyed and vehicles overturned. He noted that all possible storm warnings were activated to ensure public safety. “Mother Nature doesn’t really care,” he commented, reflecting on the devastation.
Meteorologist Holley Kamba reported receiving damage reports from southern Outagamie County and eastern Winnebago County. “We have been receiving calls of damage with a lot of trees down, power lines down,” Kamba said. “We’ve been searching for some pictures of the structural damage.”
Governor Tony Evers stated that Wisconsin is prepared to assist affected communities. Meteorologists in Green Bay issued a tornado warning at 11:59 a.m. for the Fox Cities region, including Appleton, Menasha, and Neenah. The warning advised of flying, dangerous debris and damage to mobile homes, vehicles, and trees, urging residents to find shelter.
