The Toronto Marlies captured the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup after securing a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Wolves in Game 5 held on Friday night. Vinni Lettieri was instrumental in the win, scoring during a second-period power play.
Additional goals for the Marlies in the second period were provided by Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jacob Quillan. Landon Sim contributed by scoring late in the first period, narrowing the Wolves’ lead to 2-1.
Artur Akhtyamov delivered a commendable performance, making 27 saves. He earned the playoff MVP honor with impressive postseason stats of 15-7, a 2.22 goals-against average, and a .923 save percentage. The Marlies previously lifted the Calder Cup in 2018.
On the opposing side, Felix Unger Sörum was a standout for the Wolves, scoring twice and assisting once. Josiah Slavin also found the net, and Cayden Primeau made 19 saves for the team. Despite their efforts, the Wolves, affiliated with the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, could not overcome the Marlies.
The Wolves, who have three Calder Cup wins, avoided elimination earlier in the series by securing a 4-3 overtime win on Thursday night.
