A Greek air force jet crashed during an air show on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of both pilots. The crash occurred at Tanagra air force base, located north of Athens. Thousands of spectators witnessed the incident, but no civilians were injured.
The Phantom F4 jet, a twin-seat aircraft, crashed while performing a low-altitude maneuver close to the ground. Upon impact, the jet caught fire, sending a significant plume of black smoke into the air. Emergency services, including 11 water-dropping planes, helicopters, and 85 firefighters, worked to extinguish the flames.
The sense of grief is widespread, and our thoughts are with the families of the two pilots we lost.
These words from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlight the peril that Greek aviators face daily while protecting the nation’s airspace. Video footage of the crash captured the aircraft’s break-up and a subsequent nearby fireball.
An eyewitness, speaking to Greece’s state broadcaster ERT, described being stunned by the crash, noting that the jet had been airborne for less than three minutes before the accident.
The accident took place during the annual Athens Flying Week. As a result, event organizers canceled the remaining activities, and the area was cleared.
Cyprus’ Defense Minister, Vasilis Palmas, expressed his condolences upon receiving news of the officers’ deaths. He also contacted Greece’s Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, to express his sympathies.
The Greek air force has announced a three-day period of mourning in response to this tragic incident.
In a separate incident, an air show in Idaho in May saw two jets collide. Fortunately, in that case, the pilots successfully ejected and survived.
