Tragic Avalanche Claims Lives of Experienced Climbers

Nirmal Purja, noted for leading the first all-Nepalese team to scaled Mount K2 in winter, has tragically died in an avalanche. The incident occurred on one of the world’s highest peaks, Broad Peak in Northern Pakistan, which stands at 26,414 feet. Purja’s company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed his death along with other members of the expedition group.

Purja, 43, was a distinguished British-Nepali mountaineer recognized for breaking multiple climbing records. In 2019, he became renowned for climbing all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) in just six months and six days. This achievement led to a 2021 Netflix documentary. Prior to his mountaineering fame, Purja served in the UK’s Special Boat Service, a unit akin to the US Navy SEALs.

The expedition involved climbers from Oman, Nepal, Pakistan, China, and the United States. Among them was Mallory Geis, a 39-year-old American climber from San Antonio, Texas. She had closed her Pilates studio to follow her passion for high-altitude climbing. Earlier this year, she expressed her excitement for the Broad Peak expedition in social media posts. Her father described her as a positive person with a wide array of talents.

Efforts to rescue the climbers included the use of military helicopters and high-altitude porters, but challenging terrain and weather conditions made the task difficult. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, confirmed the deaths in a social media statement, and some of the climbers’ remains have been transported to Pakistani hospitals.

Elite Expeditions expressed its sorrow over the loss, stating, “Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy.” Their condolences go out to all affected families and friends.
