After the tragic death of five Italian divers exploring a deep underwater cave off the Maldives, the families of the victims are seeking answers. Monica Montefalcone, a 52-year-old ecology professor at the University of Genoa, and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, aged 20, were among the deceased.
Other victims included marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, researcher Muriel Oddenino, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti. These experienced divers met their fate near Alimathaa in the Maldives. According to the Maldivian government, Benedetti’s body was discovered close to the cave entrance, while the remaining divers are believed trapped 160 feet deep within the cave system near Vaavu Atoll.
The investigation into the cause of deaths is ongoing. Vaavu Atoll, a cluster of islands in the central Maldives, lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India. Rough weather conditions led to concerns when the divers failed to surface by midday Thursday.
The Italian Foreign Ministry noted the divers attempted to explore caves at a depth of 164 feet. The cave, described as exceptionally hazardous, is seldom approached by divers, as mentioned by Maldivian presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef.
“The cave is so deep that divers even with the best equipment do not try to approach,” said Shareef.
This incident is marked as the worst single diving accident in the Maldives. An Italian pulmonologist indicated a possible issue with the tanks, ruling out depth as the primary problem. Claudio Micheletto, director of pulmonology at the University Hospital of Verona, stated that a tank malfunction may have gone unnoticed by the divers.
Alfonso Bolognini, president of the Italian Society of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, suggested potential causes like an incorrect breathing mixture. He also mentioned panic as a possible factor, which can lead to fatal errors when combined with equipment issues.
The search for the missing divers was suspended after Mohamed Mahdi of the Maldivian National Defense Force died from decompression sickness during the operation. The cave system consists of three large chambers linked by narrow passages. Rescue teams managed to explore two chambers but encountered decompression risks during the mission.
Authorities now await the arrival of Finnish cave-diving specialists to reevaluate the recovery efforts.
