A Washington high school lacrosse player passed away after a tragic incident during a game. Seventeen-year-old Eliot Abramson, a midfielder for Mercer Island High School, was participating in a college showcase event near Seattle on June 1 when the event turned fatal.
Abramson, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, had been an active participant in lacrosse since his elementary school years at Mercer Island. During a play, a rapidly traveling lacrosse ball struck him at the base of his neck. The ball managed to slip beneath the back of his helmet during the game. Witnesses saw Abramson lose consciousness and collapse on the field.
He was immediately taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for emergency surgery and spent almost a week in intensive care. Sadly, Eliot Abramson was pronounced dead on June 7, as confirmed by school officials and family.
His mother, Jessica Abramson-Lott, paid tribute to him on social media. She noted that he has now reunited with his biological father, Josef Abramson, who passed away when Eliot was three. In her tribute, she mentioned, “Eliot’s time on earth will end way too soon, but we are comforted that he will be in heaven with his dad, making him laugh, playing music with his smile lighting up the room. We’re sure he’ll be doing ‘wall ball’ in the sky and cheering on all his friends.”
This tragedy marks the second occurrence in a year where a young lacrosse player lost their life under similar conditions. The previous year, a 16-year-old player from Ohio, Dylan Veselic, also died following a comparable injury during a game.
