Early Tuesday, a train collided with a school minibus in Buggenhout, Belgium, resulting in several ‘victims,’ according to the interior minister. The specifics of their conditions remain unconfirmed. Reports from anonymous sources disclosed to AFP suggest several fatalities on the bus.
Reuters also cited local sources claiming fatalities, yet there is no official confirmation from police or other authorities.
With great dismay, I learned of the tragic accident in Buggenhout, where a school bus was struck by a train. My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones. I wish the injured much strength,” minister Bernard Quintin expressed on X.
Photographs from the accident site show the minibus overturned near the railway crossing, badly damaged at its front end. Emergency responders are actively working at the crash site in Buggenhout, Belgium. The collision occurred at the Vierhuizen railway crossing on May 26, 2026.
Frederic Sacre, spokesperson for the Belgian rail network operator, characterized the crash as ‘extremely violent,’ noting the ‘dramatic’ impact. Sacre explained the incident took place around 8:08 AM. The train, scheduled to stop at a station approximately a kilometer away, struck the minibus at that time.
