Transgender athlete AB Hernandez concluded a high-profile high school sports career at the California track and field state championship. Hernandez won two titles and shared podium positions with female competitors on Saturday night.
In the girls’ high jump and triple jump, Hernandez secured first place and finished third in the long jump. The previous year, Hernandez had achieved similar results, capturing state championships in the triple and high jump and finishing second in the long jump.
This year’s championship saw the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) continue its pilot program from the prior year. Girls who finished directly behind Hernandez received podium recognition. During the high jump ceremony, several girls shared the podium with Hernandez, leaving one side empty. These images circulated widely online, sparking intense debate about trans athletes in women’s sports.
The conversation reached a peak during championship weekend. Hernandez appeared in a video with Democrat gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer, while Republican candidate Steve Hilton held a rally outside the event, urging the protection of girls’ sports. This intersection of sports and politics fueled discussions throughout the event.
On Saturday, a press conference organized by local LGBTQ advocacy groups took place outside the championship. Tensions flared when “Save Girls Sports” activists confronted LGBTQ activists supporting Hernandez. Clovis police monitored but did not intervene as the verbal exchange eventually calmed.
Despite the controversy, Hernandez won two state titles that night, excelling in the high jump and triple jump. Hernandez competed in both events simultaneously, showcasing dedication and agility.
With Hernandez’s high school journey ending, the debate over transgender participation in girls’ sports continues to divide California. The U.S. Department of Justice is suing state education agencies over policies allowing trans athletes to compete against females. Hernandez’s school district is under federal investigation as well. This issue remains central in the upcoming California gubernatorial primary, impacting candidates like Hilton as they vie for election.
