Tributes Pour in for Gloria Steinem’s Legacy
Gloria Steinem, a committed journalist and activist, spent her life advocating for women’s rights from reproductive freedom to equality in the workplace. Following her death at age 92, many prominent figures in politics and popular culture are sharing their memories and gratitude for her contributions. They are also pledging to carry on her work.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, well-known as the first female presidential nominee of a major U.S. political party, reflected on Steinem’s efforts. Clinton emphasized Steinem’s role in opening doors for countless women through a heartfelt tribute on Facebook. She commented on how Steinem’s influence made it possible for other women, like Sally Ride, to achieve significant milestones.
Clinton noted Steinem’s key contributions, such as her support for the women in Congress who advanced Title IX, enabling greater opportunities in education and sports for girls. She also highlighted Steinem’s activism in crucial moments, such as during the Roe v. Wade decision. Clinton, among many women in national politics, expressed her respect and gratitude for Steinem’s persistent efforts.
Steinem emerged as a leading figure in second-wave feminism during the 1960s. By the 1970s, she had co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus and Ms. magazine. Steinem boldly addressed workplace sexism, gaining attention in 1963 with her exposé as an undercover waitress at Playboy Club. Her activism also brought forward personal accounts of abortion, and she made meaningful strides to increase women’s representation in elected positions.
In the wake of her death, younger women offered tributes on social media, each sharing personal stories. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, recounted working closely with Steinem to engage young voters and shared moments from their friendship. Meghan praised Steinem for her personal guidance, support, and nurturing spirit.
Actress Julianne Moore reflected on the impact of studying Steinem’s life for her role in the 2020 film “The Glorias.” Moore admired Steinem’s honesty and commitment to humanism and inclusion, serving as a template for her own behavior.
Male political leaders also honored Steinem. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Bernie Sanders, alongside former and current New York City mayors, expressed their respect. Rep. Jim McGovern shared that Steinem supported him early in his political career, encouraging him to persist despite hurdles from the political establishment.
Cultural icons like Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton, Stacey Abrams, and Billie Jean King also expressed what Steinem meant to them. Many of them revealed her influence on their paths and the vision to continue her endeavors.
Actress and writer Lena Dunham shared her personal debt to Steinem. Dunham received invaluable advice on numerous topics from Steinem, even inheriting a piece of her jewelry as a symbol of her generosity and mentorship.
British actress Jameela Jamil recounted a recent discussion with Steinem about the state of women’s rights and the world. Despite her age, Steinem remained a tireless advocate and continued to plan her advocacy efforts.
After the Roe v. Wade reversal, Steinem maintained her belief in the continuation of her life’s work, underscoring the necessity of connecting historical struggles with contemporary battles against patriarchy and racism.
Flowers have been placed outside Steinem’s Manhattan residence as a tribute, echoing the sentiments of countless hearts affected by her legacy. Her second memoir, “An Unexpected Life,” is scheduled for publication soon.
