Chicago White Sox rookie center fielder Tristan Peters brings energy to the ballpark with his impressive performance this season. Currently third in the American League in wins above replacement among center fielders, Peters is becoming a strong All-Star Game contender. The Sox, tied with the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central, are set for a challenging series against the New York Yankees.
Peters has played a crucial role, adding dynamic energy to the team’s great start. He expressed how fun the game has become, saying, “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t more fun… It’s just that confidence going up to the plate and like, ‘OK, I’m swinging well, just let everything else happen.’” This confidence and relaxed approach in the batter’s box are the results of significant adjustments he made in his swing.
Originally known for his hitting abilities, Peters developed as a prospect with teams like the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, and Tampa Bay Rays before joining the White Sox after being traded in the offseason. His journey included playing junior college ball in Arizona and Southern Illinois before appearing in games for the Savannah Bananas. In 2021, he got drafted by the Brewers in the seventh round.
Peters’ debut with the Rays last season was challenging as he went 0-for-12 in four games. Struggling early this season, he had a .209 batting average and a .509 OPS over 19 games. Recognizing the need for improvement, Peters collaborated with White Sox hitting coach Derek Shomon and team executives to refine his approach.
Shomon acknowledged the difficulty of adjustments but praised Peters’ willingness to embrace new techniques. Analyzing his pre-swing movements led to more efficient mechanics, enhancing his overall performance. Peters’ swing percentage on pitches in the zone increased significantly, reducing his miss rate and driving up his offensive statistics.
“He’s got a pretty simple routine built out right now, but he’s putting it on rinse, repeat every day, and it’s been cool to see a transition in in-game performance,” said Shomon.
Peters’ success is marked by impressive improvements in his batting average and OPS since mid-May. He navigated the transition from Triple A to the Major Leagues, adapting to the challenging velocity of professional pitchers. Mastery of hitting fastballs allowed Peters to become competitive against off-speed pitches as well.
Anticipating the fastball helps Peters excel against sliders and changeups, showcasing his ability to adjust and succeed. His reliable at-bats consistently bolster the lineup, often occupying the critical seventh or eighth spots. His performance aids the Sox in strategically cycling through the batting order.
Peters has earned his place in discussions for the All-Star Game in Philadelphia this summer while solidifying the team’s position in their division. His achievements affirm the confidence and foresight of the White Sox in acquiring and developing his potential.
“They acquired him because there were things in his game that could continue to be developed and ultimately show up in what we are seeing on the field today,” Shomon commended.
Despite challenges, Peters’ coachability and openness to adjustments have resulted in tangible successes, validating his presence in the Major Leagues.
