The Trump administration has paid only approximately 20% of the $90 million owed to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). This funding shortfall is affecting global efforts to manage chemical weapons threats.
The OPCW plays a vital role in dismantling chemical weapons and overseeing their use in war zones such as Syria, Ukraine, and Sudan. The lack of sufficient funds jeopardizes these operations, raising concerns among experts familiar with the situation.
Following a chemical attack on April 4, 2017, in the town of Khan Sheikhoun, located in rebel-held Idlib province, Syria, the urgency of adequate funding for the OPCW has become more pronounced. A member of the civil defense was observed using an oxygen mask to aid breathing after exposure. This incident underscores the dire need for effective chemical weapons monitoring and disposal.
