President Donald Trump declared that Russia and Ukraine have reached an energy ceasefire. He mentioned that Russia would supply diesel to the global market. Trump shared this announcement on Truth Social, stating, “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”
This announcement followed a previous energy ceasefire in mid-September. At that time, Trump wrote on Truth Social that both nations agreed not to target each other’s energy infrastructure.
The latest development comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky advocated for an energy ceasefire during an interview with ABC News’s “This Week.” Zelensky stated, “The best deal is not to have a war, to stop Putin. But the first step is a ceasefire, an energy ceasefire. OK, if they want an energy ceasefire, we are open for this. Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attacking your diesel. And I think it’s a fair, fair deal.” Despite the ceasefire announcement, reports indicated that Russia struck a Ukrainian power plant.
On Monday, Zelensky voiced support for the ceasefire to Fox News. However, he expressed uncertainty about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready for such an agreement.
