Trump’s Claims Against Judge Leon Over White House Ballroom
President Donald Trump increased his criticism of federal judges due to legal setbacks regarding two major projects: the White House ballroom expansion and Kennedy Center renovations. Trump expressed concerns on Truth Social, targeting U.S. District Judge Richard Leon, appointed by President George W. Bush, for obstructing the White House ballroom project. He labeled the lawsuit blocking the construction as ‘ridiculous’ and claimed the plaintiff lacks standing. The legal challenge was initiated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and several other groups, arguing that the administration cannot demolish the historic East Wing without congressional approval.
“The DronePort at the White House Ballroom will be, perhaps, the most sophisticated anywhere in the World! It will safeguard our Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C., long into the future,” the president stated on Truth Social.
Trump asserted that Judge Leon’s actions compromise America’s security and connectivity. The legal dispute over the ballroom has become central to the administration’s ongoing conflicts with the judiciary, especially after an incident outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Arguments and Progress on the Ballroom Project
The $400 million construction designed to replace the demolished East Wing has been allowed to proceed temporarily. This decision followed a stay granted by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, pending a hearing in June. Officials argue the ballroom is crucial to secure operations, stressing delays have impacted security. Judge Leon permitted underground security work to continue but halted above-ground construction of the 90,000-square-foot layout pending congressional vote.
The DOJ filed a motion citing a recent shooting as a reason for dismissing the legal challenge. Critics insist the scope of the project demands enhanced regulatory scrutiny.
Controversy Over Kennedy Center Renovation and Naming
Parallel to ballroom issues, the administration faces challenges concerning Kennedy Center renovations and naming rights. A federal court blocked the proposed two-year closure for renovations. The administration suffered a setback when a plan to rename the venue as “Trump-Kennedy Center” was overturned. In December 2025, a board endorsed the name change, but immediate court intervention reversed this decision.
Judge Cooper’s Intervention
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, appointed by President Barack Obama, declared the board’s actions as exceeding their authority, noting the name change needs congressional consent. Judge Cooper’s ruling voided the name change and mandated removal of Trump’s name from all center-related materials. He criticized the board for ignoring financial and programming impacts, preventing the planned July shutdown.
“Can you imagine? A Barack Hussein Obama Judge named Christopher Cooper has stopped a magnificent structural and aesthetic rebuilding of The Trump Kennedy Center…” Trump voiced his discontent on Truth Social.
Future Steps for the Kennedy Center
Following the ruling, Trump indicated potential abandonment of the landmark. He directed the Department of Commerce to arrange a full transfer back to Congress. Expressing disinterest in pursuing the rebuilding unless unbound, Trump remains focused on addressing other projects.
