On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump hinted at potential surprises as the midterm elections approach. While attending an event in Maryland, he mentioned big surprises involving Russ Vought, the White House budget chief known for his role in Project 2025. Trump offered no details, saying only, “We have some big surprises coming up in a few weeks, right Russ? He’s gonna be one of the important people in the history of our country.”
This ambiguous statement has led to speculation regarding the nature of these surprises. Critics are questioning whether Trump might be signaling actions that could influence the elections. Jessica Tarlov, a political strategist for the Democratic Party and a Fox News host, commented on social media, noting the importance of preparing for potential election interference. Joyce Vance, a lawyer and former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, expressed concerns about possible election interference.
Trump’s collaboration with Russ Vought has also drawn attention. Anthony Scaramucci, a former White House communications director, observed that Trump’s remarks seem inconsistent with his previous attempts during the 2024 campaign to distance himself from Project 2025 and its contributors. “He said in July 2024 he had nothing to do with Project 2025 and didn’t know Russ,” Scaramucci stated.
Despite the speculation, neither Trump nor the White House have confirmed any connection between the comments and the election. Some experts suggest the focus might be on Vought’s role in overseeing federal spending, grants, workforce policy, and efforts to reshape the federal government. Republican strategist Matt Klink, president of Klink Campaigns, previously suggested to Newsweek that the mention of a “midterm surprise” is more about energizing voters rather than indicating a specific event. “Trump’s remarks about a ‘Midterm Surprise’ are spin, and the spin is the point,” Klink remarked, noting it as a message aimed at enhancing voter turnout.
Newsweek has contacted the White House, OMB, and the America First Policy Institute for further comments. This story is ongoing and will be updated with new information as it becomes available.
