President Donald Trump visited several construction sites in the nation’s capital. He focused on the redevelopment of the East Potomac Golf Links. Trump claimed this project will allow the course to host major golf tournaments. He mentioned events like the U.S. Open, The Ryder Cup, and The PGA Championship as possibilities.
Trump toured the grounds with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, aides, and architects Tom Fazio and Gavin Fazio. Legal issues surround the redevelopment. A lawsuit in U.S. District Court involves the project. Future tournament scheduling remains uncertain. U.S. Open venues are confirmed up to 2051 with some gaps, such as in 2043, 2046, and 2048. The PGA Championship venues are planned through 2035.
The president criticized the course’s grass condition and sprinkler system. Demolition debris from the White House East Wing, which contains toxic metals like lead and chromium, was reportedly left on the site. The National Park Service confirmed this contamination last month.
Trump announced that the golf course work is set to begin on September 1. He also surveyed updates to Lafayette Park near the White House and discussed plans for a triumphal arch in the area. Additionally, Trump shared he would meet with Janeese Lewis George, who won the Democratic primary for Washington’s mayor. He referred to Lewis George as a “Communist” in his post.
Lewis George stated in a news conference that she intends to collaborate with anyone, including the president, for D.C. residents’ good. However, she emphasized her reluctance to preemptively comply with requests that may undermine the locally elected government.
