President Donald Trump is set to actively campaign for Republicans as they face a crucial battle to maintain control of Congress during the 2026 midterm elections. At a White House Rose Garden dinner with Republican lawmakers, Trump announced his intention to focus on approximately 35 races, emphasizing those critical for GOP majorities.
Trump has pledged to visit each of these 35 districts during the final campaign stretch. His commitment is evident, having already campaigned in states like Texas and South Carolina. Future appearances are anticipated, including a trip to Alaska to support Senator Dan Sullivan.
“It’s all about 35 races,” Trump stated. “I’m going to go to every one of those 35 places and we’re going to see if we can get everyone elected.”
While the Republican president ramps up personal involvement, Musk’s super PAC, America PAC, is also taking significant action. Financial documents indicate that America PAC invested nearly $800,000 across several critical Senate and House races. America PAC, reporting $50 million in receipts, has begun its first major independent spending in these contests, marking Musk as a vital donor this cycle.
America PAC has spent six figures supporting Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, as well as contenders in Alaska and Iowa Senate races. Additionally, funds have been allocated to Florida U.S. House District 25, where Jared Moskowitz is the Democratic nominee.
The combined efforts of Trump’s visits and Musk’s financial contributions represent a broader Republican attempt to bolster vulnerable candidates before November elections. With control of Congress hanging on a small number of races, Trump’s extensive campaigning could serve as a cornerstone of the GOP’s strategy.
Historically, midterm elections often reflect public sentiment toward the sitting president. The president’s party typically loses seats during midterms. Currently, Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House and a 53-45 majority in the Senate, excluding independent Bernie Sanders and Angus King, who caucus with Democrats.
Some states are emerging as battlegrounds where Democrats might seize Republican control. In Texas, Ken Paxton faces a tight race against Democrat James Talarico, with current polling showing a dead heat. This closeness explains Trump’s campaign efforts in Texas and the GOP’s anticipated resource influx.
Likewise, Maine presents an opportunity for Democrats striving for a four-seat gain to win the Senate. Republican Senator Susan Collins contests Democratic nominee Troy Jackson, with polls indicating a neck-and-neck race. Some surveys show Jackson with a slight advantage.
In a CNN interview, former Governor Chris Sununu remarked, “If Trump sticks to promoting his achievements, it could greatly assist the Republican Party.”
