The slow counting of mail-in ballots in California has given President Trump a chance to voice doubts about election outcomes unfavorable to him. Despite no significant evidence, he suggests electoral fraud.
Trump has claimed that the advancement of a candidate in Los Angeles’ mayoral race is a Democratic scheme. This extends his efforts to undermine confidence in elections. Spencer Pratt, a Republican with Trump’s endorsement, lost his lead to Democrat Nithya Raman. Trump reacted by suggesting fraud.
Raman surpassed Pratt as election officials counted late-arriving mail ballots, largely from Democrats. Such situations, known as the “red mirage,” were cited by Trump in 2020 to claim election theft.
Trump’s claims serve to question the integrity of elections where Democrats win. His strategy may highlight potential responses to unfavorable November results when congressional control is in play.
Trump is vocal about wanting to restrict mail voting, a popular method, calling its use into question without proof. In March, he urged Republican lawmakers to implement strict voter ID laws to curb mail-in voting.
