This week, President Donald Trump will return to the United Nations, aiming to foster international cooperation in dealing with Iran. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Mike Waltz, discussed these plans in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital prior to the gathering.
U.S. Pushes Allies on Sanctions
The U.S.-Iran conflict is now in its seventh month. Trump plans to address the General Assembly on Tuesday and meet with Gulf leaders, whose nations are directly impacted by the conflict. The U.S. seeks to intensify economic pressure on Tehran and is urging allies to enforce Iran sanctions.
“They will reinforce that message, but importantly, it’s all of these countries actually enforcing the sanctions and what they’re going to hear is there will be consequences for friend and foe,” Waltz said.
However, European and Asian allies have largely resisted such requests for support against Iran. Iran’s obstruction of shipping routes and its allies’ actions have disrupted energy markets significantly.
Focus on Sanctions Enforcement
The administration aims to make sanctions enforcement a focal point during the U.N. General Assembly. Waltz pointed to Iran’s faltering economy and emphasized the U.S. goal: preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Recently, Russia and China’s U.N. Security Council votes blocked further monitoring of Iran sanctions, prompting intensified diplomatic efforts from the U.S. to ensure sanctions are enforced globally.
Discussion with Gulf Leaders
Trump will meet Gulf leaders to discuss regional security. Waltz described these meetings as important opportunities for direct dialogue regarding collective concerns.
United Nations Reform
The Iran issue unfolds amid broader debates on U.N. reforms championed by Trump. The U.S. recently made significant payments towards the U.N. budget to avoid losing voting rights. Despite criticism, Waltz emphasized efforts to streamline U.N. spending and refocus its mission.
“We have the U.N. on a diet,” Waltz asserted.
Despite the administration’s critiques, Waltz affirmed the commitment to the U.N. as a fundamental forum for global diplomacy.
Greenland Security Agreement
Days before arriving in New York, Trump announced a security deal with Denmark and Greenland. This agreement expands the American military presence in the Arctic while limiting adversarial influences.
Waltz highlighted the strategic significance of the Arctic region and indicated that the agreement promotes diplomacy through cooperation with Nordics.
Global Gathering Overview
During the U.N. meeting, high-profile leaders from around the world will congregate. Various bilateral discussions and events are scheduled, addressing major issues like the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Waltz emphasized the administration’s approach to revitalizing the U.N., though immediate diplomatic questions remain about ally cooperation and U.N. strategies.
