On Sunday, President Donald Trump proposed changing the name of the state New Mexico to ‘New America.’ This suggestion followed his recent order to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America.’
President Trump’s suggestion emerged as part of a flurry of social media activity. His posts included memes featuring himself, derogatory remarks about his opponents, and other messages. These posts have been criticized by Democrats as being inappropriate.
The President does not possess the authority to unilaterally rename states. Changes to state names require considerable legal processes and approvals beyond presidential power.
