In a recent event at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, U.S. President Donald Trump viewed the newest addition to the presidential fleet. This aircraft, a Boeing 747, was received as a gift from the government of Qatar. The plane’s delivery, which occurred ahead of schedule on Friday, was initially the subject of much debate.
The transaction was noteworthy due to the significant size of the gift from Qatar, fueling both legal and ethical discussions. President Trump, when presented with the offer, declared last May that rejecting it would be foolish. Industry experts at the time estimated the aircraft’s value to be around $400 million.
The president expressed his admiration for the new aircraft, standing in front of it and recognizing the craftsmanship involved. He extended gratitude to the Emir of Qatar and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth while claiming the jet to be the ‘world’s most luxurious plane.’ He remarked on its transformation into a flying White House, suggesting unmatched luxury even beyond air travel.
The airplane, previously serving the Qatari Head of State, is set to undertake commissioning flights. These flights are considered the Air Force’s ‘final exam’ for the aircraft. Upon successful completion, the plane will be formally commissioned and incorporated into active presidential service.
The aircraft is intended to function as a temporary solution until the long-term VC-25B aircraft is delivered. It was developed in a timeframe ahead of expectations. Initial estimates projected delivery in 2028, but adjustments allowed for the first aircraft to be ready by 2027. The Air Force emphasized that these modifications prioritized functionality over design, keeping much of the original interior unchanged.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach highlighted the successful delivery as a significant achievement. He acknowledged the skepticism but praised the United States Air Force for delivering a secure and reliable command post earlier than anticipated.
