Unveiling the VC-25B Bridge
President Donald Trump introduced a new Air Force One aircraft in a private hangar tour, showcasing a Boeing 747 jet gifted to the United States by Qatar. Named the “VC-25B Bridge,” this luxury airliner underwent a $400 million overhaul to include secure communications and anti-missile systems. The aircraft, displayed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, features a bold color scheme of dark blue, red, and gold, chosen by Trump to replace the previous design.
The U.S. Air Force announced that the jet will soon begin commissioning flights before participating in presidential missions. Trump mentioned that it will lead a flyover above Washington, D.C., on July 4, promising an unprecedented display.
Design and Modifications
The VC-25B Bridge jet, originally a Boeing 747-8i and configured for the Qatari royal family, serves as a VVIP business liner. Unlike past presidential builds, the Air Force maintained many interiors to expedite delivery, allowing travel with Qatar’s luxury finishes. Trump highlighted its transformation into a high-end flying White House.
L3Harris Technologies played a crucial role in upgrading the commercial plane with advanced defense systems and secure satellite communication. The renowned JFK-era paint job was replaced with a deep navy-blue, sharp red, and white design, reflecting Trump’s style. This initiative originated in Trump’s first term and was reinstated after President Joe Biden’s reversal.
Future Plans for Air Force One
Trump plans to travel on the new jet to the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, and possibly China for a future summit. He noted this week’s trip back from the Group of Seven summit in France was his last on the current Air Force One.
Funding and Controversy
Though the aircraft itself was a gift, the retrofitting process sparked debate. The Pentagon estimated $400 million for modifications, yet an unexpected $934 million transfer from a missile defense program raised concerns. Defense officials justified this as necessary due to delayed replacements from Boeing.
Constitutional Concerns
The acquisition of a luxury asset from Qatar led to criticism and possible violations of the Foreign Emoluments Clause. Some lawmakers considered it a clear constitutional violation, but Trump rejected these claims. Legal guidance justified the gift under conditions that the aircraft’s ownership shifts to Trump’s future presidential library foundation post-presidency.
Continuing Use of Legacy Jets
According to an Air Force spokesperson, the current VC-25A jets will remain operational. The Presidential Airlift Group will choose between the Qatari aircraft and older models for each mission, depending on the requirements.
