President Donald Trump’s promise to offer Americans substantial payouts if Republicans secure major wins in the midterm elections is facing backlash. Democratic lawmakers have condemned the promise as an exaggerated lie and an illegal incentive.
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., criticized the proposal, stating, “I think it’s hysterical. It’s effectively a proposed bribe of the American people that we can’t afford.” Similarly, Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., remarked, “This is just fantasy land, right? $5,000 checks, plus, you know, puppies and rainbows and ponies.”
The proposal is central to Trump’s strategy to appeal to voters as Republicans strive to maintain control of Congress. He pledged the $5,000 check during a speech at the Republican National Committee’s midterm event in Dallas. Democrats see it as a campaign tactic, with Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D-Md., asserting, “It’s just a campaign promise because he knows he’s not doing well, and people are angry.”
Democratic lawmakers have labeled the $5,000 pledge as a repeated falsehood. Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, expressed disappointment, saying, “Lying to Americans around election season, what the president has done numerous times, I think it’s sad and shameful.” Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., agreed, stating, “I think it’s one more lie.”
Criticism isn’t exclusively from Democrats. Many Republicans question the feasibility and legality of the promise. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., emphasized that congressional approval would be needed for the plan. Aguilar added, “You’ve already seen House Republicans say that this isn’t going to happen.”
Implementing the plan would affect 240 million Americans and cost around $1.2 trillion. Trump has dismissed affordability concerns, arguing that the U.S. could “easily” fund the payouts. Vice President JD Vance suggested using tariff revenue for financing and proposed excluding wealthy Americans to reduce costs.
Democrats urge Trump to focus on pressing issues like healthcare. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., commented, “I’d rather give people their healthcare and their food assistance back.” Alsobrooks echoed this, “If he really cared about the American people, he would have made sure they had healthcare.”
Warnock attributed Americans’ financial struggles to Trump’s policies, stating, “The only reason why Americans would need $5,000 is because of Trump’s awful policies.”
