President Donald Trump aims to change Washington, D.C. through various construction and renovation projects. These efforts stretch from the White House grounds to the National Mall.
White House Ballroom and East Wing
The most costly endeavor is the new White House ballroom and East Wing complex. This will replace the historic East Wing, demolished last year. The ballroom, spanning 90,000 square feet, is set to conclude by summer 2028.
While Trump claimed the ballroom’s cost would not surpass $400 million and would draw from his own funds and private donations, a contractor’s report to the White House estimated costs at $600 million. Over half of this funding may stem from taxpayer money, involving the Secret Service, the White House Military Office, and the Executive Residence.
The Supreme Court recently allowed construction to proceed amid ongoing lawsuits. Trump expressed pride in the development, asserting it is under budget and ahead of schedule.
Kennedy Center Renovation
Trump has advocated a major overhaul of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a site covering over 15 million square feet. Despite support from a Trump-aligned board, legal challenges exist concerning efforts to rename the center with Trump’s name and temporarily close it for renovations. Congress allocated nearly $257 million for these repairs.
A court order in May prohibited renaming the center and blocked its closure for renovations. Despite this, the board voted to include Trump’s name in an altered name format for the center.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick noted that identifying Trump’s involvement could attract substantial donations for further renovations.
Triumphal Arch
One ambitious project is a planned 250-foot-tall Triumphal Arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Though no official cost estimate exists, speculation places the expense around $100 million. Excavations for the arch will commence shortly.
The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, all Trump appointees, granted early approval. The design includes “ONE NATION UNDER GOD” inscribed and features a Lady Liberty-like figure with gold details.
Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
The project to renovate the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has faced delays. Initial cost estimates of $1.5 million rose to over $16 million due to issues like peeling sealant and algae growth.
Blame for the sealant problems was directed at vandalism, with charges against an accused individual later dropped. Recently, a $2.7 million contract was awarded to resolve the algae issue.
East Potomac Golf Links
Trump also plans to transform East Potomac Golf Links into a premier golf course. There is no released cost estimate, and while private contributions aim to fund the development, clarity is sought on potential taxpayer involvement.
An ongoing lawsuit challenges the redevelopment, focusing on environmental and preservation laws and public access rights.
