Trump’s Immigration Policy Echoes Historical Restrictions

In 1924, the United States Congress communicated a stark message to the world, signaling a major shift in immigration policy. Fears related to crime, demographic changes, and economic concerns prompted lawmakers to set strict quotas limiting immigration from countries like Italy, Poland, and Russia. The legislation effectively barred Asian immigrants and capped the total number of immigrants at 150,000 per year. Representative Albert Johnson of Washington, a Republican, emphatically expressed the sentiment of the era, stating that the U.S. needed to stop functioning as an asylum.
