Trump’s Influence Affects Louisiana Senate Race

President Donald Trump’s influence on Republican politics remains significant, according to Sen. John Kennedy, R-La. Recently, Trump’s endorsement played a vital role in a Louisiana Senate race, resulting in the defeat of incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy.

“Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable,” Kennedy remarked on “The Sunday Briefing.” He noted that polls had long shown Cassidy was in jeopardy, and Trump’s support for Congresswoman Julia Letlow further sealed the outcome. Despite knowing the stakes, Cassidy chose to run, which Kennedy respected.

In the GOP primary, Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming surpassed Cassidy, as reported by the Associated Press. Letlow secured roughly 45% of the vote, Fleming around 28%, and Cassidy just under 25%. Neither candidate achieved over 50%, leading Letlow and Fleming to a runoff.

Bill Cassidy, who voted against Trump during his impeachment, faced criticism from the former president. Trump referred to Cassidy as “a disloyal disaster” via social media, claiming he is detrimental to Louisiana. Celebrating Cassidy’s defeat, Trump commented that “his political career is OVER.”

Cassidy’s concession speech included a subtle retort aimed at Trump. He emphasized the importance of accepting election results without complaints or unfounded allegations. Cassidy expressed gratitude to voters for his time representing Louisiana.

While Trump’s endorsement of Letlow contributed to her success, Kennedy mentioned other factors that influenced voter decisions. Confusion arose due to changes in the election process. Closed primaries, replacing the open system, led to voter dissatisfaction. Compounding the situation, the postponed congressional elections contrasted with the ongoing Senate election.

Sen. Kennedy concluded that Trump’s endorsement undeniably impacted the race. However, Cassidy’s political difficulties over the past year were already evident.
