The Republican primary race in New Hampshire showcased the impact of former President Donald Trump’s endorsements. Businessman Anthony DiLorenzo emerged victorious in the GOP primary for New Hampshire’s 1st U.S. House district, which is one of the state’s key battlegrounds. He overcame competitors including Hollie Noveletsky, owner of Novel Iron Works, and state Rep. Brian Cole.
This primary was significant as it provided insight into the dynamics of the open seat currently held by Rep. Chris Pappas, who is campaigning for the U.S. Senate. The 1st Congressional District leans slightly Democratic but represents an opportunity for Republicans with the right candidate. It encompasses parts of southern New Hampshire, including Manchester.
DiLorenzo faced challenges during debates, particularly from Noveletsky and Cole who criticized his stance on illegal immigration. In a podcast, he suggested that the focus should be on deporting felons and violent criminals rather than individuals who have not committed crimes after entering the U.S. Noveletsky expressed strong disagreement with this approach during debates.
Trump backed DiLorenzo in July, emphasizing his business acumen and alignment with America First policies. DiLorenzo’s campaign also received support from key Republican leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
Noveletsky, in contrast, had endorsements from several New Hampshire state officials and House Rules Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx.
The New Hampshire race adds to the narrative of Trump’s influence in Republican primaries. While his endorsements have led to victories, the challenges faced by his candidates reveal deeper divisions within the party regarding issues like immigration.
