Trump’s Tactics Against GOP Holdouts Over AG Nominee

President Donald Trump is confronting Republican senators who are blocking the confirmation of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. After Blanche’s confirmation was delayed, Trump criticized Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. He made his remarks on Truth Social, targeting the two senators from the Senate Judiciary Committee who oppose his nominee.

Trump threatened to withdraw Blanche’s nomination until both senators are out of office. He expressed strong support for Blanche, calling him a potential “greatest Attorney General.” Trump indicated his willingness to resubmit Blanche’s nomination after Cornyn and Tillis leave office next year.

While Trump disrupted Cornyn’s re-election by endorsing Ken Paxton for the nomination, Tillis chose to retire. Cornyn quickly dismissed the threat and both senators seek written commitments for altering a settlement between the IRS and Trump’s family earlier this year.

Cornyn, responding on social media, clarified that concerns over the tax lawsuit provisions are not confined to him and Tillis. Their resistance led Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley to delay Blanche’s confirmation hearing. Negotiations continue, but the Republicans’ conditions for withdrawing a nearly $2 billion fund and changing Trump’s audit immunity remain unmet.

There is uncertainty if the Senate would be more favorable to Blanche next year, as it faces a potential shift in Republican-held seats. Trump could keep Blanche as acting attorney general for an extended period, as seen in previous administrations.
