Trump’s Urgent Appeal to Senate Republicans: End the Filibuster

President Donald Trump is urging Senate Republicans to eliminate a longstanding Senate rule known as the filibuster. He believes this action is crucial to maintain Republican dominance in presidential elections. Trump’s warning is stark. Without removing the filibuster, he predicts that Democrats will change the political landscape permanently.
Trump argues that Democrats, if unchecked, will make Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico states, thereby increasing Democratic representation in Congress. This move could make it significantly harder for any future Republican candidate to win the presidency.
“If Senate Republicans don’t TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, the Dumocrats will, and I will be, despite how well our Party is doing, the last Republican President,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
Washington, D.C., grants voters three electoral votes in presidential elections, leaning heavily Democratic. Puerto Rican voters can participate in primaries, but not in federal elections, as neither is a state. Democrats have previously pushed to change this status.
The filibuster, requiring 60 votes to pass most Senate legislation, forces bipartisan cooperation. Trump’s main agenda item, the SAVE America Act, remains stalled due to this requirement, with opposition from both Democrats and some Republicans.
The last significant filibuster confrontation was in 2022 when Democrats attempted to adjust the rules for voting rights legislation. Despite these efforts, Republicans remain resistant to scrapping the filibuster.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has consistently countered Trump’s demand, emphasizing that the GOP lacks sufficient support to remove the filibuster. Thune previously highlighted that at least half of Senate Republicans favor keeping it intact.
“At some point, Democrats may try and steal the car, but we’re not going to hand them the keys,” Thune remarked.
Thune warns that abolishing the filibuster would enable Democrats to pursue ambitious goals, such as granting statehood to Puerto Rico and D.C., federalizing elections, or expanding the Supreme Court.
