This incident follows months of controversy. The White House has used images from various Japanese franchises like “Dragon Ball,” “Yu-Gi-Oh!” and “Pokémon.” For instance, anime was used in a TikTok video in March celebrating U.S. airstrikes on Iran.

The U.S. Government has not yet commented on Japan’s objections. Key players in the anime industry, such as Bandai Namco Entertainment and Studio Pierrot, have also remained silent.

While the use of animation is common in the White House’s posts, involving series like “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Marvel, and DC Comics, Japan’s cultural ties to anime mean Trump’s actions have sparked significant backlash. Anime plays a crucial role in Japan’s identity, and its politicized use by the Trump administration is seen as controversial.
