Twin Bond: How a New York Mom Observes Her Babies’ Comforting Routine

MariLuz Roth, a mom from Long Island, has shared a touching look into how her identical twin daughters, Maple and Fiona, comfort each other to sleep. Captured on video, the twins are seen chatting, reading, and cuddling together until they fall asleep face-to-face, a scene that holds sentimental value for Roth. As they spent much of their time in this way while in the womb, Roth, a developmental specialist, finds this behavior particularly meaningful.

Roth explained to Newsweek how this comforting routine naturally developed without any specific method. She emphasized the importance of parents doing what feels right for their family. However, she strongly believes in the benefit of a consistent and predictable routine for every child.

In the Roth household, the twins end their day by saying goodnight to their father and then settling into a routine filled with books, conversations, and affection. What starts as a short story can turn into a long session as they discuss pictures, answer questions, and make up stories as a family.

“Most nights they spend anywhere from a few minutes to quite a while talking to each other, playing quietly, or reading together before naturally drifting off to sleep,” Roth mentioned.

From infancy, Maple and Fiona have shared a strong bond. Initially co-sleeping with their mother, they transitioned into their own room around the age of 10 months. Their cribs were placed side-by-side, as they seemed most content when close, often sleeping with their hands intertwined through the crib rails.

As they grew, their language skills and independence improved, turning their bond into a mutual source of comfort. Roth noted there wasn’t a specific moment when they began helping each other sleep; it evolved naturally.

A video of this routine was shared on Instagram under @doublethemilestones and quickly went viral, collecting 1.3 million views. Many users in the comments admired the wholesome nightly routine, describing it as “precious” and “beautiful.” At the time of capturing the footage, Fiona and Maple were a little over two years old.

Reflecting on their interaction, Roth remarked on the girls’ instinctive care for each other and aimed to nurture, not interrupt, their bond. Their developing emotional awareness continually surprises her, with the girls comforting one another during distress and celebrating each other’s successes.

Witnessing this bond inspired Roth to document their lives online. She said she hoped these captured moments might remind others of genuine innocence, empathy, and love amid the negativity present in the world.
