Two Die After Boat Capsizes Near Liberty Island
Two individuals, including an infant, lost their lives after a boat overturned near Liberty Island in New York Harbor on Saturday night. The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed officers were dispatched following a report of a capsized vessel around 10:25 p.m.
Authorities stated that before police arrived, twelve people had already been rescued from the water. NYPD divers later found an adult female and an infant, both of whom were transported to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn. They were in critical condition at the time and were subsequently pronounced dead. Their identities have not been disclosed.
Some of the other passengers were also taken to the hospital and are said to be in stable condition. The cause of the accident is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.
A police source indicated that the vessel involved was a 22-foot bowrider. The NYPD’s Harbor Unit, Scuba Team, and Aviation Unit, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, responded to the incident.
This event remains under investigation, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
