Tyler Vo, a junior at Andrean, embodies gratitude in every aspect of his life. This extends beyond sports, as he seeks to honor his family’s legacy. Some of his relatives left Vietnam to eventually settle in the United States.
“That’s what motivates me to excel,” Vo expressed. “It’s real life. What I have is a gift, motivating me to excel in everything—being a good person, son, and teammate.”
Standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 180 pounds, Vo is a standout wide receiver. He has snagged 38 catches for 391 yards and three touchdowns for Andrean, a co-leader in the Northwest Crossroads Conference with a 6-1 record.
Vo’s grandfather served in South Vietnam’s army, aiding the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. To escape capture by North Vietnam, his grandparents fled at night with Vo’s father and uncle.
“They escaped on a fishing boat,” Vo recounted, explaining that after a month without food or water, they reached the Philippines. Vo’s grandfather ensured his family reached safety by swimming them to shore.
Sponsored by St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hammond, Vo’s family arrived in the U.S. in August 1978. Sadly, his grandmother passed away in 1981. “My grandfather cared for two boys alone, despite not knowing English,” Vo shared.
His parents, Tay and Sarah, operate Aqua Spa Nails in Chesterton. They maintain strong ties with relatives in Vietnam. The family last visited Vietnam the summer before Vo started eighth grade. Their Vietnamese relatives visit every two years.
Andrean coach Chris Skinner praised Vo, noting the school’s diversity as its strength. “T-Vo represents our values and those of the real world with diverse backgrounds,” Skinner commented. “His family’s immigration story reflects his positivity and the opportunities here.”
Vo’s brother Thomas, who graduated in 2022 from Valparaiso, played baseball and football. Employed in supply chain management in Chicago, Thomas graduated from Westminster College after playing baseball there. Vo himself plays baseball, contributing as a reserve outfielder and courtesy runner for Andrean, the Class 3A state runner-up last spring. However, his football prowess stands out.
During the previous season, Vo earned all-state honors as the 59ers clinched the Class 2A state title. His performance included 82 catches for 1,109 yards and 12 touchdowns. This season, he plays alongside talented receivers Stetson Sullivan, Gavin Helpingstine, and Mark Grubbs Jr., contributing to the team’s No. 3 ranking in the coaches’ poll.
“He’s an outstanding receiver and a dependable leader,” praised Dylan Gore, Andrean’s junior quarterback. “Tyler excels in his assignments, helping teammates, and is a versatile athlete.”
Skinner commended Vo’s skills. “T-Vo is a precise route runner. He controls his body well, setting up plays with precision and understanding complex plays.”
Vo’s skills are likely to attract college opportunities. “Post-junior year, we focus on recruiting discussions,” Skinner said. Vo has attracted interest from prestigious universities like Harvard and Columbia. Reflecting his commitment to academics, Vo stated, “My parents emphasize good grades. I’m considering studying pharmacy.”
Vo aims to play Division I football in college. “Getting a DI offer would be incredible,” Vo concluded.
