The U.S. Men’s National Team has reestablished strength and confidence. Former goalkeeper Tim Howard shared insights with OutKick, noting that the Yanks’ impressive win against Paraguay highlights their potential threat before facing Australia. The nation is clearly engaged, with the match drawing 24.9 million viewers— the highest for a soccer game in U.S. history.
“So many good things, so many contributions,” Howard said, stressing the potential for even more goals. “It’s really good to win a game and say, ‘Gosh, I wish we almost had six.’ That’s a good place to be.”
Howard praised Folarin Balogun’s two goals, Christian Pulisic’s impact in attack, and strong defensive plays as key points for optimism. He believes there is ample opportunity for growth.
Howard also commented on the goalkeeper situation. With Matt Freese starting ahead of veteran Matt Turner, Howard no longer sees goalkeeper competition as open. He firmly views Freese as the clear U.S. No. 1.
Analyzing the upcoming match against Australia, Howard anticipates a different challenge. He warned about Australia’s physical style and the risk of rhythm disruption for the U.S. team.
“It’s going to be a physical game,” Howard noted. He emphasized the need to maintain rhythm to exploit footballing strengths, predicting a dominant performance if the U.S. maintains physical parity.
Howard expects a goal-rich performance if physical challenges are matched, predicting a 3-1 or 3-0 U.S. victory.
Off the field, Howard highlighted fan involvement’s importance in boosting team momentum as the 2026 World Cup looms. He cited the ‘Home Field Advantage’ campaign by Jim Beam to foster soccer culture and energize supporters.
“There’s a cultural and togetherness aspect of soccer,” Howard said, stressing building a supportive atmosphere around the national team. “We need to build this culture and hype around this team and help propel them, as best we can, on and off the field.”
Fans are seen as vital players in creating home-field advantage and sustaining team momentum through their support.
