The U.S. military reports having targeted a boat accused of drug smuggling in the eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. This action is part of the Trump administration’s ongoing effort against supposed traffickers in Latin America. The incident raises the number of fatalities from U.S. military’s naval strikes to over 240 across more than 70 operations since the campaign began in September 2025.
According to U.S. Southern Command, the targeted operations occur along known smuggling routes based on intelligence reports indicating narcotrafficking activities. The military, however, has not provided concrete evidence of drug transport in the latest incident. A circulated video on X depicts a small boat stationary before an explosive finale. This adds to the pattern of engagement stated by the U.S. military.
President Trump has declared an ‘armed conflict’ with Latin American cartels, justifying these attacks as necessary to curb drug flow into the U.S. and address fatal overdoses. Yet, tangible proof supporting the narrative of eliminating ‘narcoterrorists’ is minimal, prompting skepticism over the strikes’ legality and efficiency. Critics note that fentanyl, a major cause of overdoses in the U.S., is predominantly trafficked through land routes from Mexico.
Democratic lawmakers and military legal scholars express concerns. In May, the Pentagon announced a review of whether the military adhered to its targeting procedures, excluding legal assessments of the strikes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in September an intent to cultivate regional allies’ support for such operations, marking a strategic adjustment. Nonetheless, Rubio asserted the U.S.’s readiness to act unilaterally if necessary.
Incidents in past months included an August strike in the Pacific killing two on an alleged drug boat, and a June attack in the Caribbean with similar smuggling accusations. Some events have sparked debates about their conduct, particularly follow-up strikes on survivors. In September 2025, the U.S. employed a civilian-style aircraft in an attack against a Venezuelan boat, ending with 11 fatalities. These operations continue to provoke substantial discussion on their ethical implications and strategic outcomes.
