The U.S. Navy is advancing its air defense capabilities with the development of a new missile. This missile, known as AIM-424 LRAAM or “MALICE,” aims to intercept enemy aircraft from considerable distances, enhancing the protection of American fighter jets and aircraft carriers.
The Navy announced this cutting-edge weapon on August 22.
A key feature of the AIM-424 LRAAM is its ability to be launched from a jet. It targets enemy aircraft or drones at extreme ranges, allowing pilots to engage the threat before it approaches. This capability is intended to boost the survivability of American pilots by preventing close encounters with adversaries.
The missile is part of the Navy’s strategy to maintain a tactical advantage by enabling pilots to get the first look, first shot, and first kill in air-to-air engagements. It promises increased reach, survivability, and tactical flexibility, enhancing the overall combat effectiveness of Marine and Naval aviation forces.
The missile boasts a range exceeding 250 nautical miles, equating to approximately 287 statute miles. This considerable distance allows jets to defend fleets from threats over the horizon, making it an invaluable asset to naval operations.
Weighing 1,500 pounds and measuring 13.5 feet in length, the AIM-424 is larger and heavier than existing medium-range air-to-air missiles. Its propulsion system is robust, driving the missile to reach these extended distances. In comparison, the AIM-120 AMRAAM, another air-to-air missile, weighs around 335 pounds.
The AIM-424 features a blast-fragmentation warhead. This technology enables the missile to damage or destroy targets by detonating near them, dispersing fragments to neutralize the threat without needing a direct hit.
Compatible with aircraft from fourth to fifth-generation fighters, as well as future sixth-generation models, the missile demonstrates significant versatility. Its development by Raytheon, a prominent defense contractor serving the U.S. military, ensures cutting-edge performance.
With these advancements, the AIM-424 LRAAM signals the Navy’s commitment to strengthening aerial defense capabilities, securing safety and tactical superiority in future conflicts.
