Berlin — The U.S. is progressing significantly in its plans to establish a permanent Army base in Poland, according to President Trump. He announced this development in a Truth Social post, which was also shared by the White House on X. Trump emphasized this as a “historic step” in the U.S.-Poland alliance.
Poland likely views Trump’s statement favorably due to increasing concerns about Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine potentially spilling into NATO regions.
Concerns of Russia’s War Expanding
Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, addressed the Polish parliament about the risk of Russia’s conflict extending into NATO territory. He mentioned a “real risk” that drones or other projectiles could impact countries on NATO’s eastern flank, potentially causing damage. Tusk pointed to unspecified intelligence suggesting Russia might label such occurrences as accidents, which could undermine NATO’s collective response.
Tusk highlighted Russia’s use of advanced jet-powered attack drones against Ukraine. These drones, faster and with higher altitude capabilities, pose interception challenges. Additionally, he noted Russia’s increasing focus on Ukrainian infrastructure near Poland’s border.

Recently, a Russian drone targeted a Ukrainian train carrying dignitaries, including European officials and ex-CIA Director David Petraeus, forcing evacuation close to the Polish border. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed distrust of Russia’s actions, suggesting they aimed to intimidate him and foreign leaders. Another nearby drone strike on a truck led Poland to temporarily cease cross-border traffic and heighten security measures.
Poland Fortifies Border
Poland is enhancing its military readiness. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that soldiers are reinforcing the border infrastructure with Hesco bastions—wire structures filled with sand or gravel—alongside new observation and guard posts. This reinforcement is confirmed at several crossings, including Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa. Although details on the number of added soldiers remain undisclosed, officials stress these actions focus on infrastructure security rather than full-scale mobilization.

Poland and its NATO partners understand that a permanent U.S. troop deployment would substantially bolster NATO’s eastern fortifications.
Challenges in NATO Communication
Trump’s recent communication praising the “Great U.S./Polish Alliance” reflects ongoing shifts within his administration’s strategies concerning U.S. troop deployments. Earlier confusion arose when Vice President JD Vance accused media of exaggeration related to a postponed U.S. troop deployment to Poland. Following this, Trump announced an updated deployment plan for 5,000 troops.
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Sweden’s counterpart Maria Malmer Stenergard acknowledged the complexities in navigating the U.S.’s NATO stance. Currently, approximately 10,000 U.S. troops in Poland are stationed mainly on a rotational basis.
In June, Defense Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz noted ongoing discussions regarding a permanent U.S. base proposal in Poland, with potential sites at Poznań and Wrocław, though no final decision has been made.
U.S. Military Review
The Pentagon is reviewing U.S. troop deployments across Europe. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced this review, criticizing NATO allies for their lack of action during the Iran conflict. Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of concluding discussions on potential locations for a permanent base.
