President Donald Trump declared that the United States secured an agreement to manage Greenland’s security needs permanently. The announcement on Truth Social highlighted no cost to the U.S. for this agreement.
Trump stated that U.S. representatives collaborated with Denmark and Greenland to ensure security in Greenland and the United States. The president emphasized that adversaries cannot establish military bases or make investments in Greenland without explicit U.S. consent.
Danish and Greenlandic leaders offered a different view. A joint statement from Denmark’s Foreign Ministry indicated that the agreement, aimed at enhancing security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, will be signed next week. The accord becomes effective after necessary parliamentary procedures.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stressed the deal’s role in bolstering the security of Greenland, Denmark, and the Western Alliance. He underscored Greenland’s interests and international cooperation.
“It is to the benefit of us all,” Nielsen remarked.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed the agreement’s goal to enhance Arctic security while respecting Greenland’s sovereignty and self-determination.
In a follow-up Facebook post, Nielsen reiterated Greenland’s sovereignty and the people’s self-determination rights. Earlier, Nielsen had affirmed that Greenland was not for sale and didn’t seek U.S. ownership.
Neither Nielsen nor Frederiksen characterized the agreement as a sovereignty transfer. They described it as a security accord among Greenland, Denmark, and the U.S.
The announcement followed a late-night declaration in Denmark. Denmark’s Foreign Ministry provided no further comments beyond the joint statement.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the deal, labeling it a historic achievement for U.S. national security.
“Greenland will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America,” Rubio stated. “This deal permanently addresses our security concerns in Greenland.”
Trump, on Truth Social, celebrated resolving an issue deemed strategically important by past presidents. He described the agreement as having “Infinite Life.” The U.S. plans to develop a substantial military presence in Greenland, working with local communities.
The president deemed the arrangement beneficial for Americans, Greenlanders, Danes, and allies. Trump asserted the high strategic value of Greenland, the world’s 12th largest territory.
U.S. officials have voiced hopes of seeing Greenland become a U.S. territory. Vice President JD Vance visited in March 2025.
Rubio reiterated the deal’s significance on social media, describing it as a comprehensive solution to U.S. security concerns.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen conveyed hopes for an agreement that enhances Arctic security while respecting Denmark’s established boundaries.
Details of the agreement, including potential expansion of the U.S. military presence and shifts in foreign policy authorities, remain undisclosed. Trump’s interest reportedly stems from preventing Russian and Chinese military expansion due to Greenland’s strategic location and resources.
